Romania reveals VL MICA order
Doug Richardson
Miroslav Gyürösi
Romania has announced that it will be the launch customer for the land-based version of MBDA's vertically launched MICA (VL MICA) surface-to-air (SAM) missile system.
When it announced the order on 16 June MBDA did not disclose the client, but in the latest issue the Romanian Air Force magazine Cer Senin (Clear Sky), Major General Ion-Aurel Stanciu, the new commander-in-chief of the service, revealed that he had signed a contract for VL MICA and the shorter-range Mistral surface-to-air missile system during his visit to the recent Paris Air Show.
He also hinted that Romania might be close to selecting a longer-range SAM system to meet its HISAM requirement. "We haven't forgotten the HISAM programme", he told the magazine. "It is possible that the people employed in the surface-to-air missile units will have a pleasant surprise sooner than they expect."
During a test firing conducted by the DGA (Délégation Générale pour l'Armement) Centre d'Essais de Lancement de Missiles (CELM) test range in Biscarosse, France, on 8 July, the land-based version of VL MICA demonstrated its ability to protect littoral zones against air attack mounted from the sea. The test was jointly organised by the DGA, the French Air Force and MBDA under the SALVE (Sol-Air à Lancement Vertical) programme and was observed by six foreign delegations.
A MICA IR missile fired from a land-based vertical launcher used its infrared seeker in the final stages of flight against a target mimicking an enemy missile flying at about 10 m above the surface of the sea. It scored a direct hit at a range of approximately 15 km. This was the 15th consecutive successful firing of MICA from a vertical launcher.
For the July trial, the CLA (Conteneur Lanceur Autonome - or Autonomous Launch Container) that will equip both the ground and naval versions of the system was installed in a vertical launch vehicle which was operated under the control of a Tactical Operation Centre located 6 km away. This configuration is typical of that planned for area-defence operations.
