PROBLEMS WITH 5.56mm AMMUNITION
British foot patrols were initially equipped only with 5.56 guns; the L85A2 rifle, L86A2 Light Support Weapon, and L110A1 Minimi Para light machine gun. Similarly, US troops were primarily armed with the M4 Carbine (Army) or M16A4 rifle (USMC) plus the M249 LMG (Minimi). These all fired the standard NATO ball ammunition, designated SS109 (M855 in US service). However, this ammunition proved inadequate at long range. Whatever performance they may demonstrate on a firing range, a combination of battle experience and the testing of ammunition terminal effectiveness led to a judgment that weapons with the 500 mm (c.20 inch) barrels that the ammunition was designed for were effective only up to about 300 metres. Weapons with shorter barrels, such as the M4 and the Minimi Para LMG, have reduced ballistics resulting in an even shorter effective range. What this means is that more than half the small-arms engagements took place beyond the effective range of the standard British infantry rifle, and about 70% of the engagements were beyond the effective range of short-barrelled carbines like the M4.PD) Si lo que se desea es un arma "manejable" como una carabina, teóricamente el ideal sería una configuración bullpup (con un diseño que permita el intercambio rápido de hombro) con un cañón de largo "normal" y unas miras adecuadas (incluso montando un supresor probablemente un bullpup tendría menor longitud que un rifle de asalto "normal").
