The Peruvian Navy (Marina de Guerra del Peru/MGP) has placed a EUR3.4 million (USD4.7 million) order with Rheinmetall for two MASS (Multi Ammunition Softkill System) decoy systems for installation in two Aguirre-class (Lupo) frigates.
According to Jane's sources in Lima, the MGP is upgrading at least six of its eight Carvajal-class (modified Lupo) and Aguirre-class frigates, incorporating a considerable quantity of locally developed technology.
However, funds are limited and only two of the ships – the contenders are believed to be BAP Aguirre, BAP Bolognesi and BAP Quiñones – will receive a comprehensive renewal of their sensor and weapon fits. The remaining vessels can expect limited upgrades for enhanced performance in certain areas.
At the heart of the programme is the new Varayoc combat management system, which was developed by SIMA (Servicios Industriales de Marina) and has been trialled in BAP Carvajal for almost two years. Now, the MGP has begun replacing the obsolete Alenia IPN-10 combat system with Varayoc aboard two more frigates, with the other hulls to follow.
