Building the Navy
Continuing from the 50s, the ROK Navy continued to build naval surface forces mainly with ships transferred from the U.S. Navy.
During the Vietnam War, the ROK Navy dispatched naval transport units called Baekgu; the ROKMC dispatched combat units called Cheongnyong to Vietnam.
On January 19, 1967, ROKS Dangpo (PCEC 56), the former USS Marfa (PCE-842), was sunk by North Korean coastal artillery north of the demarcation line off the east coast of Korea[23] In June 1970, a navy broadcast vessel (ROKS I-2) was captured by North Korean patrol craft in the vicinity of Yeonpyeong Islands in the West Sea (Yellow Sea).[24]
In the 70s, the ROK Navy, through the Park Chung-hee Administration's "Yulgok Plan" (an 8-year national defense plan "to build up self-reliant, national defense capability"[25]), began to build naval forces with indigenous technologies; this initiated the ROK Navy to build fleets with locally built ships. The first 2,000-ton frigate ROKS Ulsan (FF 951) was launched in 1980 and the first 1,000-ton corvette ROKS Pohang (PCC 756) was launched in 1982 with indigenous technologies. The ROK Navy continued to carry out other new shipbuilding projects such as mine sweepers, logistic support ships and amphibious landing ships in the 80s and 90s.
In 1973, once a separate branch of the ROK Armed Forces, the ROKMC became a part of the ROK Navy.

Modernizing the Navy
Since the 90s, the ROK Navy has been steadily upgrading its naval forces. In 1995, Admiral An Pyongtae, the 20th Chief of Naval Operations, presented the vision of building a blue-water navy for the future of the ROK Navy in his inaugural address.[26]
As a part of a plan to strengthen the surface combatant forces, the ROK Navy launched the lead ship of the Kwanggaeto the Great class destroyer in 1996 to replace the former USN destroyers. For building submarines forces, the ROK Navy acquired its first submarine (excluding midget submarines) ROKS Chang Bogo (SS 061) from Germany in 1992. In order to replace the aged S-2 Trackers, Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft were delivered to the ROK Navy from 1995.
In June 1999, the ROK Navy forces engaged the North Korea naval forces near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the vicinity of Yeonpyeong Islands. In June 2002, the two Navies engaged again in the same vicinity resulting in the sinking of ROKS PKM 357.

The ROK Navy continues to put its efforts to build a blue-water navy. In 2001, then President Kim Dae-jung announced a plan for building up the Strategic Mobile Fleet.[27]
In 2002, the lead ship (DDH 975) of the 4,500-ton Chungmugong Yi Sunshin class destroyer was launched. In 2005, the 14,000-ton amphibious landing ship, ROKS Dokdo (LPH 6111) was launched. In 2006, the ROK Navy launched the lead ship (SS 072) of the 1,800-ton Sohn Wonyil class submarine, which was named after the first Chief of Naval Operations, equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. Un buque de la Armada norcoreana entró este jueves en aguas territoriales surcoreanas, cruzando la disputada frontera marítima cuestionada por Pyongyang, indicó una fuente militar en Seúl.
La intromisión tuvo lugar poco antes de las tres de la tarde (ocho de la mañana en España) en medio de la tensión surgida entre ambos países dos semanas después de que Corea del Norte realizara un ensayo nuclear y lanzara varios misiles de corto alcance.
El buque "violó brevemente" el límite norte que marca la frontera marítima entre las dos Coreas, indicó a la AFP un vocero del Estado Mayor surcoreano.
Regreso tras la advertencia
"El navío regresó luego a las aguas territoriales norcoreanas", precisó.
El buque cruzó la frontera marítima en el Mar Amarillo (oeste) el jueves por la tarde antes de regresar a las aguas territoriales norcoreanas 50 minutos después de haber recibido una advertencia de un navío surcoreano, indicó el Estado Mayor de Seúl en un comunicado.
El incidente se desarrolló en un clima de tensiones regionales cada vez mayores tras el ensayo nuclear de Corea del Norte del 25 de mayo, condenado por la comunidad internacional, y el lanzamiento de seis misiles de corto alcance.

no hay duda de que si cores sigue creciendo va a tener una de las mejores armadas del mundo y mas con todos esos misiles y sus nuevas naves. por cierto no dice mucha gente (sibre todo en españa) que los destructores estan un poco obsoletos para las armadas actuales

Bueno, voy a poner unas cosillas sobre la Armada de Corea del Sur:
Destructores:
Los Aegis Sejong el Grande:
Sejong el Grande en servicio, Yulgok Yi I para agosto de 2010 y Kwon Yul prevista para 2011. De 8.500 toneladas, a plena carga queda cerca de las 11.000 tons, 30 nudos. Su armamento consta de 1 cañon de 127mm/L62 Mk-45 Mod 4, 1 x 30 mm Goalkeeper CIWS, 1 x RAM Block 1, 80 celdas para Mk 41 VLS SM-2 Block IIIB/IV antiaereos, 4 x 4 SSM-700K Hae Sung (misiles antibuque de largo alcance), 32 x Hyunmoo III misiles de superficie, 16 x K-ASROC Red Shark y 2 tubos lanzatorpedos triples K745 LW Blue Shark.
Los Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin: son 6. Desplazan 5.500 tons. a plena carga, 30 nudos, con el radar AN/SPS-49 y 64 VLS, del modo siguiente:
32 celdas:Mk 41 SM-2 Block IIIA
Otras 32 para 8 Hong Sang Eo (Red Shark), misiles antisubmarinos, y para misiles Hyunmoo III.
Llevan además 21 RAM y 8 Harpoon.
Los 3 Gwanggaeto el Grande: clasificados como destructores, sus menos de 4.000 tons. les hace merecer mas el apelativo de fragatas, aunque su potencia de fuego es mayor que la de muchas otras fragatas. Velocidad de 30 nudos. Van armadas con un cañon OTO 127 mm/54, 2 de 30 mm, 16 misiles MK 48 Sea Sparrow (SAM), Harpoons y 2 tubos lanzatorpedos triples. Llevan el radar AN/SPS-49(V) 2D.
Fragatas: es la clase Ulsan, con 9 unidades de 2.350 toneladas, 34 nudos, 2 cañones de 76mm, 3 de 40mm, 8 misiles Harpoon, 2 tubos lanzatorpedos triples.
Submarinos: 12 en servicio.
3 clase Son Won-il, que son alemanes Type 214 modificados, concebidos para luchar con otros submarinos. 6 mas en construccion.
9 clase Chang Bogo, que son básicamente el Type 209.
Además 2 submarinos enanos clase Dolgorae (sin interés).
Corbetas:
21 clase Pohang (como el Cheonan, 1.200 toneladas, 2x76mm y 2 de 40mm, 4 misiles antibuque y cargas submarinas.
3 clase Donghae (1.076 tons, armadas con cañones, torpedos y cargas antisubmarinas).
Patrulleras:
1 Yoon Youngha de 440 toneladas, 41 nudos de velocidad, se prevé que sustituya a la clase Pohang (24 unidades), no sé si está operativo.
La clase Chamsuri son 75 lanchas cañoneras de 170 toneladas y 37 nudos que llevan 1 cañon de 40mm y 2 Sea Vulcan. Se estan construyendo unas patrulleras de 200 toneladas para sustituirlas.
Buques anfibios:
1 LPH clase Dokdo de 14.000 toneladas (15 helicopteros, 720 soldados y 6 carros de combate y 7 vehiculos anfibios). En construccion otros 2.
4 clase Go Jun Bong de 2.600 tons, son LST que pueden llevar 12 carros y 14 anfibios.
5 LSF ya antiguos.
Minadores, cazaminas:
1 Wonsan (previstos 3, cancelados 2). De 3.000 tons, puede llevar 500 minas, lleva 1 cañon de 76mm y 2 de 40mm.
3 cazaminas clase Yangyang y 6 clase Ganggyeong.
Buques auxiliares: 9 (3 AOE, 1 rescate submarinos, 2 salvamento y rescate, 2 AGS, 1 nodriza de submarinos enanos).
Aeronaves:
11 P-3 Orion (8 P-3C, 3 P-3CK). Se prevé la entrega de 5 P-3CK este mismo año.
10 helicopteros UH-60P.
23 helicopteros Lynch (11 SuperLynch) antisubmarinos.
3 avionetas Caravan II y 5 helicopteros Alouette III.
Destructores:

Cuenta con un personal de 68.000 personas, 27.000 del Cuerpo de Marines.
Estos últimos están organizados como un cuerpo independiente, a imitación de los marines de Estados Unidos, en 2 divisiones y 1 brigada.
