That evening Rogge once again mustered the entire crew. He thanked them for their dedication and announced that the Naval High Command had alloted thirty Iron Cross, Second Class, authorizations to the ship. The standard German naval practice was to award decoration authorizations to the ship but to leave the individual selections to the captain's discretion. Rogge explained that he would not choose thirty men above the other crewmen. In his view, every crew member of the ship had earned the award, and Rogge did not want to arouse ill feelings or start a competition by issuing individual awards while at sea. The decorations would be awarded at the end of the cruise.
The ship kept a constant radio watch and had even recently received a message allotting fifty more Iron Crosses, Second Class, to the crew (...) Rogge did, however, change his mind about medals for the crew and decided to award the eighty Iron Crosses while still at sea.
The next day, the crew dressed in their best uniforms to sing carols and celebrate Christmas together. The captain handed each man a carefully wrapped present, told the story of the Nativity, and bestowed another fifteen Iron Crosses, Second Class, on deserving crewmen.
The last day of March 1941 marked Atlantis's one-year anniversary at sea. Grand Admiral Raeder sent a congratulatory message and awarded the entire ship's company Iron Cross, Second Class, medals. The signal also authorized Rogge to award a number of the more prestigious Iron Cross, First Class, medals to selected crew members.
In Berlin, the crew formed up at the Hotel Kaiserhof for a stately meeting with Grand Admiral Raeder at which each man from Atlantis was individually decorated. Kapitän-zur-See Rogge received the addition of the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross.
