Saludos, Ave_Negra (momentáneamente afectado a tareas terrestres).

Jul. 28, 2004 0:48

Arrow-2 missile test a success

By ARIEH O'SULLIVAN

Thursday's testing of Israel's Arrow-2 missile against a live Scud rocket on the California coast was successful.

Previous tests against Scud mock-ups had been successful, but this is the first time a live Scud has been destroyed by the Arrow system.

Yair Ramati, head of the MALAM division in the Israel Aircraft Industries that built the Arrow-2, followed the test at a US Naval base in California, and said that the target missile reached a distance of about 300km one minute after it was launched. It was at this point that the Scud was picked up by the Arrow's tracking system. Two-and-a-half minutes after the Scud's launching, the Arrow-2 launched to intercept. The Arrow scored a direct hit on the Scud missile at an altitude of 40 km.

The group of US experts following the test heaped praise on the system's functionality, Israel Radio reported.

Security sources told Israel Radio that the cooperation between the Israel Aircraft Industries and the US military establishment enables "fighting distant threats and varied targets."

Defense Ministry official Arieh Herzog said the Arrow-2's performance was "perfect."

"The Air Force has an excellent system. We knew this, but now we have proof," he said. "We are continuing to develop this anti-ballistic system and other possible tools that will give us an answer to threats such as Iran."

The Arrow-2 intercepts an enemy missile as it reenters the earth's atmosphere, far from Israeli territory. The system includes not only the missile, but also the 'Green Pine' tracking system that can detect and track several targets simultaneously. The system is controlled from the 'Golden Citron' command module, from which several Arrow-2 missiles can be operated, and which discerns between real targets and 'fake' ones.

The test, which had been postponed the day before due to weather conditions, was aimed at examining modifications made to the Arrow-2's warhead and sequencing, enabling it can strike higher and more accurately than earlier models, said sources familiar with the project.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said that the success of the Arrow-2 test is a central pillar of Israel's defense network.

"We live in an age of uncertainty. Certain states continue to seek non-conventional capabilities and long-range launching systems," Mofaz said.

The question remains, though, will the Arrow-2 be able to strike down the faster Iranian Shihab-3 rocket? This is the question that technicians and defense officials have been grappling with since the Iranians developed the Shihab-3, which could soon be armed with an existential, nuclear threat against the Jewish state.

For the moment, neither defense officials nor representatives of the Israel Aircraft Industries who led the design and production of the Arrow system are willing to talk on the record. That will come only after the test launch at a US missile testing range off the Pacific coast.
