Eurofighter Typhoon successfully adds more air-to-ground capabilities

16:37 GMT, April 11, 2011 Hallbergmoos | The Eurofighter’s air-to-ground capabilites were further improved last week when partner company Cassidian Spain achieved the first EGBU-16 precision guided munition avionic release.

This success comes immediately after the first successful Paveway IV release carried out during February in the UK. These trials saw both bomb types being successfully released from Eurofighter aircraft and focused on the functional integration into the weapon system.

The EGBU-16 is the selected dual mode precision guided munition for Germany, Spain and Italy where as the Paveway IV precision guided bomb is the choice for the UK. Included in the broad-ranging Phase 1 Enhancement (P1E) programme, both weapons improve the all weather precision attack capability on the Typhoon.

The Typhoon aircraft has been autonomously air-to-ground capable since 2008 when the RAF succesfully integrated the Paveway laser guided bombs with the Litening III laser designation pod on to its Typhoon fleet. Demonstrating an unrivalled precision, the combination of weapons have been tested during several exercises both in the UK and abroad, confirming the built-in multi-role capability of the Typhoon.

Typhoon joins Tornado in Libya ground attack operations

15:55 GMT, April 13, 2011 Typhoon jets are providing a ground attack capability in addition to Tornado GR4 aircraft as British forces continue to support NATO operations in Libya.

Speaking to the media in London, Air Vice-Marshal Phil Osborn, Air Officer Commanding No 2 Group, said that the use of Typhoon in a multi-role fit, combined with Tornado, provides a highly responsive and balanced capability while maintaining the deployed force at the most efficient level.

The Typhoons are carrying Enhanced Paveway II bombs for the operation, complementing the ordnance carried by the GR4s and increasing the variety of precision-guided weapons available to NATO.

Air Vice-Marshal Osborn revealed that yesterday evening a Typhoon patrolling with a Tornado over western Libya was able to positively identify regime main battle tanks (MBTs) to the south of Misurata. The two aircraft attacked and the Typhoon successfully engaged two MBTs with Enhanced Paveway II bombs, while the Tornado hit another MBT with Paveway IV.

He also said that the RAF have sufficient Typhoon aircrew to undertake the current task, with appropriate training for all the systems and weapons carried by the aircraft, whether air-to-air or air-to-ground munitions.

Speaking about the wider operation, Major General John Lorimer, the Chief of the Defence Staff's Strategic Communications Officer, said that most of the fighting in Libya remains focused firstly around the siege of Misurata by Colonel Gaddafi's forces, and secondly the rather fluid situation in the region of Brega and Ajdabiya.

"We should recognise that, within the constraints of air power, the NATO-led operation is delivering very real effect," Major General Lorimer said.

"Over the weekend, for example, NATO has reported successful engagements against 61 armoured vehicles and air defence assets. A third of these - 20 - were attacked by RAF fast jets, all in the area of either Misurata, or Brega and Ajdabiya.

"As everyone recognises, Colonel Gaddafi still poses a very real threat to civilians, but other means, including infantry in pick-up trucks and technicals, which are of course much more challenging from a targeting perspective. But it is with heavy armour and artillery that the regime is most able to inflict extensive casualties on the civilian population, and day by day these assets are being steadily denied to the regime.

"Since the start of operations to enforce UNSCR [United Nations Security Council Resolution] 1973, about 100 tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and SAMs [surface-to-air missiles] have been engaged by RAF aircraft alone, including eight main battle tanks attacked yesterday."

Major General Lorimer said more needs to be done and NATO has asked for more ground attack aircraft to be made available, to which the UK has responded by increasing to twelve the number of Tornado GR4s deployed, and equipping four Typhoons to operate in either the ground attack or the air defence role as the commander requires.

He said that the use of Typhoon in a multi-role fit, combined with Tornado, provides a highly responsive and balanced capability while maintaining the deployed force at the most efficient level.

The General added that the RAF is now providing a quarter of the ground attack assets, and the UK is pressing other nations to match our commitment to what is proving to be the most important aspect of the NATO operation.

In addition, other RAF aircraft continue to provide invaluable support across the NATO effort: E-3D Sentries and VC10 and TriStar tankers provide a very significant proportion respectively of the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) and air-to-air refuelling needed by the NATO operation, and the Sentinel and Nimrod R1 provide unique capabilities amongst the non-US forces.

"These aircraft are all conducting very prolonged missions on a daily basis: RAF aircraft are flying on average around 15 per cent of the NATO sorties, but have been averaging about 25 per cent of the hours flown," Major General Lorimer said.

At sea, he confirmed that HMS Liverpool took over patrolling responsibilities off the Libyan coast from HMS Cumberland last week and that the minehunter HMS Brocklesby has also been contributing to the maritime surveillance task. Meanwhile, the submarine HMS Turbulent remains on hand should targets specifically requiring a Tomahawk strike be identified.

Major General Lorimer stressed that the importance of the maritime patrol should not be underestimated: "The fact that thus far the enforcement of the arms embargo under UNSCRs 1970 and 1973 has not been challenged should not belie the necessity for it, particularly as over time the regime's military resources are lost or expended."

Ahora más que nunca nosotros tenemos que apostar por nuestro Eurofigter, desarrollarlo al maximo para que sea un gran sustituto de los F-1 y del F-18,

...pues teniendo en cuenta, que los Indios tienen intenciones de utilizarlo tambien en operaciones embarcados, y que el Rafale, ya tiene esa version, espero equivocarme, pero creo que tiene mas papeletas que el Typhoon.

Se que EADS, esta intentando estrujar la supuesta version naval del EFA, pero no estoy seguro de que los Indios quieran correr con los gastos de desarrollo de esa version, mas integrarlos en el aparato, mas probarlo, realizar las pruebas...etc...con lo que todo eso se puede demorar en el tiempo...ojala esto veo la luz, pero teniendo en cuenta, que los mismos socios fundadores del EFA, a excepcion de Alemania, poseen aviacion embarcada, y que el unico que tiene intenciones de abandonar las versiones embarcadas VSTOVL, son los perfidos, y se han tirado hacia el F-35C...creo que le va a costar salir MUCHO a este Thypoon naval...

Y ojo que PERSONALMENTE, me gustaria MUCHISIMO, ver a la 9º Esc. de la FLOAN, los "COBRAS", con el EF-2000 Typhoon, pero me da a mi que va a ser que NO.

Por cierto, como apunte, la RAF dentro de la Operacion ELLAMY, en el marco de la Guerra con Libia, tiene desplegados 10 EF-2000 Typhoon de los No.3 y 11 Squadrons, en la base italiana de Gioia del Colle.

En realidad, no. No tienen esa intencion para nada. El concurso es por un avion basado en tierra puro y duro. Otra cosa es que todo el mundo haya puesto como punto a favor que esos aviones pudieran o no ser utilizados desde los portaviones. Pero no desde este concurso, sino para una futura compra que podria redundar en comunalidades de ambos proyectos. Con lo que historicamente les ha preocupado a los indios la comunalidad logistica, yo no me preocuparia.

En realidad, lo mas reseñable de esta eleccion (aparte de la posible compra) es el grado de confianza en las modernizaciones del EFA. Por ejemplo, al Gripen le han echado porque no les ofrecia garantias que el AESA llegara a buen puerto, luego es de colegir que confian plenamente en el AESA del tiffie. Como confian en las TVC, etc, etc, y demas parafernalia que viene con ese proyecto.

¿ Que aviones sustituiran a los F 18 A+ de Gando?

Estos no tiene la MLU y son los que menos vida operativa les queda.-

Se supone que si se efectúa el incremento de 16 unidades mas de Typhon en la compra final irán destinados a Gando , peron mientras tanto , quien los sustituiría?

De confirmarse la opción de compra de esos 16 typhoon extra para el 462esc. de Gando, supongo que se les equipará con aviones ya operativos de Morón o en su momento de Albacete.
De no confirmarse dicha opción de compra, digo yo que cuando los F/A-18 A+ digan basta, se les equipará con EF-18MLU de Zaragoza y Torrejón hasta ver que pasa con ellos.

También se ha escrito (hace unas semanas) que la T3B no está ni mucho menos muerta, que está en negociación y que España y Alemania la quieren seguro, aunque sólo ellos no podrían firmarla (dineros). Y que una venta grande (como la de la India) supondría un gran impulso. Decían que el límite para firmar la T3B, si hubiera, debería ser antes de 2012.

De los actuales 35 Typhon que tenemos , cuantos son biplazas?

Tenemos 12 ó 13 biplazas (8 Tranche 1, casi todos pasados ya a Bloque 5, y los restantes son Tranche 2).

¿"Operativos" porque algunos T1 se están modernizando a Bloque 5 y no están disponibles o porque sólo hemos recibido 9? Es que esto último me extrañaría porque lo planificado a día de hoy eran 12 ó 13, salvo que decidieran cambiarlo.
