Instead, the cavalrymen encountered Mexican Fedral troops under Gen. Felix Gomez. Negotiations failed and the 80 cavalrymen prepared to attack the Mexicans, who had an estimated strength of between 400 and 500.

As the line drew close to a dried irrigation ditch, they came under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Although bullets were impacting all around, the cavalrymen returned accurate fire. By now wounded, Captain Boyd stood to lead his men forward from the irrigation ditch, but was instantly killed. Lieutenant Adair took command and carried C Troop forward, storming the town.
