Senator Portman: Sell Lima tanks to Morocco, keep plant openThe United States Army wants to close the tank plant in Lima.
Now, an Ohio senator is trying to keep the plant open by building tanks for Morocco.
According to his website, Senator Rob Portman (R) met with the Moroccan ambassador Wednesday.
Portman is trying to convince Moroccan armed forces to buy M1-A1 tanks built in Lima.
The U.S. Army has said it has enough tanks already.
It has proposed mothballing the Lima plant for the next three years to save money.
The facility is the fifth largest employer in Lima, with roughly 500 workers.
In a statement on his website, Senator Portman says,"I am pleased that the Moroccan government is looking to further build upon this relationship by procuring the Ohio-built Abrams tank... I remain concerned with the Army's plan to rely solely on these foreign sales, but I'll continue doing what I can to help with this process.

Portman pitches Lima-built tanks to Morocco The Defense Department previously asked to mothball the Lima production facility from 2014 to 2017 because officials believe they have enough tanks and want to save money. The plant is trying to remain operational with its current 500 employees by relying on foreign sales.
Portman also announced he sent a letter to the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, asking to qualify Lima for assistance through the Office of Economic Adjustment Defense Industry Adjustment Program. The program helps workforces in communities affected by changes in Defense Department decisions.
