...The dipping sonar carried by Soviet ASW helicopters has probably a maximum effective range of 440 to 8800 yards in active mode and 11000 yards in passive mode (although some sources claim that the effective range in passive mode is 20200 yards)...
Y sobre los patrones de busqueda:
...A searching helicopter may follow either a straight course or one that zigzags courses, at an average speed of 38 knots. The distance between helicopters is normally 1,6 times the effective sonar range . In search without overlaps, the distance between helicopters is 0,8-0,9 times the effective sonar.
The helicopters follows a sonar search cycle consisting of flight to the initial search position, search, and flight to the next position. Upon arriving at the initial position the helicopter stops moving forward and descends to a hovering altitude of 50 to 65 feet above the sea surface.
The navigator must maintain a stationary position. The Soviets say that a helicopter searches for two or three minutes ( in practice this time is more longer), and if it detects a submarine the contact is maintained for six to seven minutes in order to determine the targets’s elements of movements. If the helicopters does not obtain a contact, it flies to the next position and resumes searching. The distance between successive search points is 1,25-1,6 times the effective sonar range – reportedly about 16400 yards...
...Unlike ASW surface ships, helicopters are covert in action and highly mobile. They can search large areas quickly and can conduct protracted tracking of high speed submarines...
...ASW helicopters operating independently conduct searches in the assigned area when a destroyer-helicopter is not available or when there are not friendly ASW surface ships nearby. Land base helicopters are used to conduct control searches at the approaches to naval bases or ports or in specific sections os coastal waters
For barrier search the Soviets mainly use land base helicopters patrolling along an ASW barrier in coastal waters or in a starit or narrows where hostile submarines are expected to pass.
Because of their high speed speed and fast reaction, land base helicopters normally conduct open-ocean on-call searches contiguous with the Soviet controlled coast...
