The exercises will involve scenarios featuring military divers. Land forces including the Romanian border police and intelligence services will also take part.

Russia's Pacific Fleet holds live firing drills in Far East
RIA Novosti

15/09/2008 10:09 VLADIVOSTOK, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - A naval task force from Russia's Pacific Fleet has started scheduled exercises involving live firing in the Sea of Japan, a fleet spokesman said on Monday.

"For the next few days the warships will conduct a series of training exercises, which mainly involve live firing at simulated targets," the source said.

He said the Admiral Vinogradov and Marshal Shaposhnikov large ASW ships will practice on Monday AA artillery and SAM firing at a target drone.

"During the next stage of the exercise, the ships will fire anti-ship missiles at a surface target," the source said.

The current drills are the third in a series of combat training exercises conducted by the Pacific Fleet in the past month. Two previous exercises off Russia's Far East coast involved over 50 warships and submarines, along with naval aircraft and naval infantry.

Russia also announced last week that strategic submarines from the Russian Pacific Fleet would conduct test launches of ballistic missiles at the Kura test site in Kamchatka on September 15-20

LA NAVY BAUTIZA A SU NUEVO BARCO DE LA CLASE LEWIS & CLA

Mensaje por Carlos Martín »

LA NAVY BAUTIZA COMO USNS CARL BRASHEAR A SU NUEVO BARCO DE LA CLASE LEWIS & CLARK
Navy to Christen USNS Carl Brashear

The Navy will launch and christen dry cargo/ammunition ship the USNS Carl Brashear at a 10 a.m. PDT ceremony on Sept. 18, 2008. The christening ceremony for the newest ship in the Lewis and Clark (T-AKE) class of underway replenishment ships will be held at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, Calif.

Designated as T-AKE 7, the new ship honors Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate (Master Diver) Carl M. Brashear (1931-2006), who joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. He was a pioneer in the Navy as one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the Navy Diving School and was designated a Navy salvage diver. He was the first African-American to qualify and serve as a master diver while on active duty and the first U.S. Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee, the result of a leg injury he sustained during a salvage operation. After 31 years of service, Brashear officially retired from the U.S. Navy on April 1, 1979. Brashear was the subject of the 2000 movie "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding Jr.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead will speak at the christening ceremony and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Joe R. Campa Jr. will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. Serving as ship’s sponsor, Lauren Brashear will christen the ship in honor of her grandfather. The launching ceremony will include the time-honored Navy tradition when the sponsor breaks a bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen the ship “USNS Carl Brashear.”

USNS Carl Brashear is the seventh ship of the Navy’s T-AKE 1 class. The T-AKE program calls for up to 14 ships, the first 11 of which will serve as combat logistics force ships and the last three of which are expected to be part of the Maritime Prepositioning Force (Future). As a combat logistics force ship, USNS Carl Brashear will directly contribute to the ability of the Navy to maintain a worldwide forward presence by delivering ammunition, food, fuel, and other dry cargo to U.S. and allied ships at sea. The ship is designed to operate independently for extended periods at sea and can carry and support two helicopters to conduct vertical replenishment.

As part of Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force, the USNS Carl Brashear is designated as a United States Naval Ship (USNS) and will be crewed by 124 civil service mariners working for MSC. The ship will also have a military detachment of 11 U.S. Navy Sailors to provide supply coordination and, when needed, can carry a helicopter detachment of up to 36.

IRAN UTILIZA LA ELITE DE SU EJERCITO PARA PATRULLAR EL GOLFO

Mensaje por Carlos Martín »

IRAN UTILIZA LA ELITE DE SU EJERCITO PARA PATRULLAR EL GOLFO
(AP) Iran announced Tuesday that it has put the elite Revolutionary Guards in charge of defending the country's territorial Persian Gulf waters in what appeared to be a hardening of its stance in the vital oil route.

U.S. commanders in the Gulf have in the past said they find Guards ships more confrontational than the regular Iranian navy, which until the new order was responsible for Iranian defenses in the Gulf.

Iran has warned repeatedly that it will close the narrow Hormuz Strait at the mouth of the Gulf if the United States or Israel attacks it amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program. Around 40 percent of the world's oil passes through Hormuz. Last winter, Iranian and U.S. ships patrolling the Gulf had a series of small confrontations in Hormuz that the Americans blamed on provocations by Guards ships.

Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, the top military adviser of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, announced the change on the state news agency IRNA. He said "responsibility to defend the Persian Gulf" has been delegated to the Guards' navy, while the regular navy would operate in the Oman Sea, outside the Gulf and in the landlocked Caspian Sea.

Safavi, who was the head of the Guards until earlier this year, added a warning that all vessels in the Gulf are within the range of Iranian missiles.

"The Guards' missiles are able to cover the whole width of the Persian Gulf. No warship can pass through the waterway without being in our range," he said. "Our armed forces, possessed with defensive weapons including missiles, air, sea and torpedoes, are able to control the strait of Hormuz."

He also repeated warnings that Iran would retaliate against U.S. bases in the Gulf if Israel launches a strike against Iran.

"The Zionist regime doesn't have the necessary political, economic and social capabilities to start a big war," he said. If Israel attacks, U.S. forces in the region "will be put in serious danger. Definitely, the Americans don't want to get involved in a fourth front after conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Georgia."

Israel, which is believed to possess a nuclear arsenal, has warned it would attack Iran to prevent the Persian state from acquiring nuclear weapons. The U.S. says it seeking a diplomatic solution, but has not ruled out military action. Iran denies it intends to develop nuclear weapons.

The Guards corps, which has land, navy and air components, is considered better equipped than the normal military and more ideologically fervent, tasked with protecting Iran's Islamic government, dominated by hard-line clerics.

The Guards' vessels stepped up patrols in Hormuz last year during a period when the U.S. had increased its naval strength in the Gulf, making a show of strength over Iran's defiance of U.N. resolutions on its nuclear program. The Guards say their navy vessels ask ships to identify themselves before entering the Gulf.

Despite last year's frictions, U.S. Navy and Iranian officials say their vessels are in frequent radio contact to avoid incidents in the waters of the narrow, heavily trafficked Gulf.

BRUSSELS - NATO war ships would leave the Black Sea on Wednesday and would be on their way to the Mediterranean.
According to a written statement issued by NATO, NATO war ships that arrived in Black Sea for "routine visits and military exercises planned earlier" on August 21st have completed their duties and would be leaving the Black Sea.

NATO war ships did not stay in the Black Sea for more than 21 days based on the Montreux Convention.

The NATO statement said that Spanish "Juan de Borbon", German "Lubeck", Polish "Pulaski" and U.S. "Taylor" war ships would continue military exercises in the Mediterranean.

NATO war ships paid visits to Romanian and Bulgarian ports and participated in joint operations under the command of Spanish Admiral Juan Rodriguez Garat.

AUSTRALIA ADQUIERE EL CAÑÓN MK45 PARA SUS DESTRUCTORES AWD

Mensaje por Carlos Martín »

AUSTRALIA ADQUIERE EL CAÑÓN MK45 PARA SUS DESTRUCTORES AWD
Greg Combet, the Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Procurement, today congratulated the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance on awarding a contract to BAE Systems to provide the Mark 45 Gun for the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) AWDs.

"The weapon will provide the destroyers with both a sea and land warfare capability. The gun has a range of 60 nautical miles and will be capable of firing both RAN standard munitions and extended range munitions," Mr Combet said.

The value of the contract is approximately $80 million.

A variant of the gun is already in operation on the RAN's ANZAC Class frigates, in US Navy destroyers, Spanish F100 and in several other navies.

With today's announcement, the AWD Alliance has now let contracts or identified preferred suppliers for the delivery of equipment worth more than $1 billion. This equipment includes the core Aegis combat system for the ship as well as the gun and sonar systems.

The procurement processes for a number of other combat system components are also at an advanced stage, including the navigation radar, satellite communications, the torpedo launch system, the surface to surface missile system and the countermeasures capability.

"It is expected that the AWD Alliance will make a decision early next year on contracts to build ship modules or blocks", some of which will be fabricated around the country, and then integrated at the ASC facility in Adelaide. The total value of that work is estimated to be around $400 million.

"The AWD project is a very important procurement project and the Government will continue to monitor the progress of the AWD Alliance very closely to ensure that it meets the significant challenges that come with any project of this size and complexity," Mr Combet said.

The AWD Alliance is made up of the Defence Materiel Organisation, ASC and Raytheon Australia. The first of the AWDs is scheduled for delivery in late 2014.

Saludos
